Project 3 - Final Presentation: Further development

Further to the development of the initial plans, as much as I really wanted to take the original form further, I found it too complicated to work successfully, considering the time frame.

Having said that, I have taken the original and simplified it somewhat with the help of my fellow students. All images are 1:100 scale; black mass to the right is the cliff.

Final Presentation - Project 3 - Initial

This last few weeks have been a bit of a nightmare. My mother took a turn for the worst on Saturday June 10, and the doctor advised she would be lucky to see the end of the week. Given this journal is being updated after the fact, Mum died last Thursday night, June 14, at 11:30 pm, approximately 36 hours after I presented what I had developed so far. Not a great deal, as I had trouble focusing on what was needed because of the circumstances.

My lecturer, Yasu Santo, has granted me an extension to Monday June 18, of which I am very grateful. I thnk Yasu and my tutor, Brett Hudson, for their understanding during this period.

Cybertheque - Take 2

Ok, have been thinking about the 'chaoticness' of this learning space. Still looking at using boxes, but of differing size and shapes, cubes as well as rectangular boxes, attached to and jutting out from, the cliff itself, with an entry at the cliff-top. Could be an engineering nightmare, but I'll worry about that later.
Possible plan view with ground lvl
Section view, against the cliff
Potential front view
Need to work on the internal 'chaos' and how to manifest that; balancing this with the practical needs of a learning space.

Post Assignment 2 - Update

Oh well, didn't too well in that one.

The tutor felt that I didn't capture the 'chaos' all that well from the Folie, and he is right, it really doesn't look like it has been smashed against the cliff and is a bit too conservative and staid. Need to work on that big time.

I put it down to still having trouble getting what is in my head on to paper or into CAD. Will be asking for help, that's for sure for the final assignment.

Assignment 2 Development...belated...

Doing things a bit round about here, but the following is the development process for my Project/Assignment 2 presentation.
First up, at the suggestion of our tutor, the idea of the crashed cubes took hold and ran with that, so see the presentation itself in the previous post.
Cube Jungle

But before that, I thought further about the 7 Principles of Learning Space Design I found earlier on in Week 2, and developed a graphical version, based on my own thoughts, which were for six, not seven:
Principles of Learning Space Design - according to Carol.
As a way to further determine what is needed in the learning space (or library, if you like), did a bit of 'mind-mapping' of sorts to define what happens in that space:

Learning space 'mind-map'
Thought a bit about people flow through the space, only the ground floor at first and based on my first 'plan':
Initial people flow investigation
Investigation into activities throughout building, on how many floors would you find each activity.
First drafts of ground and first floor plans, but still along way to go.
Initial ground floor plan
Initial first floor plan - incomplete

A rather late update......

Ok, this is a bit, well a lot, later than it should have been, but that's the way it is.

This is the link to the project due May 2.

Wk 7: Lecture and Tutorial

Had a guest lecturer today, Ruwan Fernando, a PhD student who is also a tutor. He gave me lots to think about, especially considering a concept and thinking that through before even attempting a design. Ruwan also brought up a few things to look at and read, such as Einstein's Tomb by Lebbeus Woods, something called TEDX Talks.
The Rhino and Grasshopper demo I will have to look into and have a play with, because it looks to be a bit of fun.

My tutor, Brett Hudson, gave us ideas of what is expected in the next assignment, in two weeks:
  • All diagrams, very little text
  • Don't worry about colour or materials, just shading and textures
    • Black, white and shades of gray
  • Show volumes and spaces and how they are used
  • Diagrams to show space relationships, use relationships
  • Look at showing how light penetrates and bounces around within the building
  • Shadows and how they affect the spaces, inside and out
  • Put in a fair amount of detail
  • Preferably hand-drawn, but some CAD stuff OK
  • Maybe show other options for the building or parts of it
  • Presentation:
    • Digital, such as PowerPoint
    • Nothing printed is needed
    • Aim for 5 minutes or so
    • No restriction on the slide numbers
    • Each one must show clearly the content and be able to be seen from the other side of the table
As for my own design, Brett suggested I look at keeping the 'crashed house' look of the Folie, as in boxes, crashed up against the cliff as the beginnings of the building; different angles, box bits, how to navigate these 'box bits'.

Lots to think about and lots to draw. In other words, scrap what I have done and start again.
